Re-constructing the demo video using Vegas 9

We shall construct this in two parts, this is part one, the section containing the title animation will be in part two.

Vegas Preferences

Turn on 'Looping' in preferences for this first part, by doing so the end of the animations can be simply dragged out to extend their duration to the length of the composition.

Go to the 'View' menu and turn on 'Active Take Information'. The name of the animation will then be visible in the timeline.

We are working in an NTSC SD 16:9 widescreen project.

Import the wedding footage together with the required animations.

Right click on the imported items and select properties.

Ensure the imported items are correctly interpreted, see below..

mask and motion background

overlay and particle effect

Set up 3 empty tracks in the timeline and begin laying out the timeline by adding the motion background to the bottom track.

Add the wedding footage directly above the motion background.

Finally, add the black and white mask to the top track.

This is what you should now be seeing in the preview window.

Next, go to the Video FX window and find the Mask Generator, drag the Luminance Mask preset onto the black and white mask in the timeline.

Now click the 'Compositing Mode' button on the track containing the mask.

Choose 'Multiply (Mask)' from it's pop up menu.

Click the 'Make Compositing Child' button on the track containing the wedding footage.

The motion background should now appear in the area around the mask shape.

Positioning

The wedding couple are not quite in the best position on screen to fit perfectly inside the overlay shape but this is no problem.

We moved the wedding footage to the left using the Pan control.

Finally, add two more tracks containing the overlay animation and it's matching particle effect.

More on positioning with the Pan/Crop controls.

The pan/crop controls in Vegas let you place any element anywhere on screen so the layout is very flexible.

If you want to you can move the couple and the overlay complete with particle effect completely to the right hand side of the screen as shown below, if you copy the 'X center' position with shortcut keys 'Control C' you can simply paste this with 'Control V' into the setting on the other items in the composition.
